The name of this process is called galvanization or electroplating.
A metal such as aluminum, for example, is coated with gold. To gold-plate a ring made of aluminum, the ring will be the cathode attached to a negative pole stack.
And at the positive pole, the anode should be a gold blade.
The electrodes should be dipped in a gold salt such as gold nitrate. This way the gold will settle in the aluminum ring. It can then be said that the aluminum was dipped in gold (salt), so it is gold plated.
